Holistic Nutrition is not a Diet; it is a Lifestyle

/hōˈlistik/ adjective

“…dealing with or treating the whole of something or someone and not just a part…”

Cambridge Dictionary

The word ‘holistic’ means to look at something as a whole and not just at the sum of it’s parts. That is exactly what holistic nutrition does. It looks at a person as an individual, as a unit, and feeds you based on your lifestyle, health and environment. Those that practice holistic nutrition believe you need to be fed, body, mind, and soul to make you as healthy as you can possibly be.

We are inundated with diets and eating plans that promise extreme and unrealistic results do not always take into consideration you as a whole person. Hippocrates foresaw much holism and healing through the food we eat. Everything that you eat plays a vital role in how your body functions and how you are feeling over all, physically, mentally and emotionally.

What is the difference between a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and a Dietician?

It is important to understand that although the approaches may differ, both designations have a similar goal: to aid you in your journey to wellness.

A Registered Dietician (RD) holds a university degree, undergoes training and an internship. Their approach is evidence-based on scientific studies with a focus on programs such as Canada’s Food Guide. Their training is extensive and their approach is more caloric-based, although more and more Dieticians are becoming open to individual-focused plans!

A Registered Holistic Nutritionist (RHN) holds a post-secondary diploma, with similar courses and training to a Dietician. It is an individualized-based approach with a focus on absorption, digestion and assimilation of nutrients. A large part of holistic nutrition is working with you to build your lifestyle wellness plan with support in many areas of your life: nutrition, lifestyle, mindset and self-care.
