Finding Self-Love Now

Self-Love can easily be one of the greatest difficulties we face in our lives. To look at ourselves in the mirror with the same devotion and care as we do with those around us can be impossible. During times of crisis when life has becoming overwhelming and uncertain, self-love can become non-existent.

Learning to love yourself starts from birth and is influenced by your upbringing, your school years, your personal relationships throughout your life and the situations you find yourself in. And let me tell you, although many influencers look like they live amazing lives, they struggle too. I recently read ‘Open Book’ by Jessica Simpson. Now here is a woman who is astoundingly successful, a mom of 3 with a loving husband and yet she was so miserable with who she was as a person, she drank, a lot! Her true story gripped my heart and helped me realize that we all struggle at some point or all the time with truly knowing how to love ourselves. We love our partners unconditionally, our world revolves around our children or grandchildren, yet that same passionate love is lost on us.Learning to love yourself starts from birth and is influenced by your upbringing, your school years, your personal relationships throughout your life and the situations you find yourself in. There should be no one else that loves you as truly and deeply than YOU do. No one else will accompany you on your lifelong journey, no one will ever completely understand your experiences, your thoughts and your feelings like you do. You will always be Your Partner from conception to death and taking that journey with someone you love will be so much more enjoyable than with someone you don’t like.

I recently found myself basking in the vastness of the Grand Canyon. If you’ve ever seen it in person you will understand when I say I was utterly speechless the moment I drank in its beauty. If you have never had the pleasure of sitting in its glory, add it your bucket list. The word ‘grand’ pales in comparison to the vastness, the grandeur, the mind-blowing scale of this wonder. In that wonderful moment of seeing and comprehending that I was actually standing here on the edge of an incredible creation of Mother Earth, nothing else existed. I was completely one with nature and there was nowhere else I wanted to be than there in that moment. Sitting on the edge of this canyon with my feet dangling the side, I was so small and the earth was so great and beautiful and vast. I came to the realization that the gigantic problems I had allowed to consume my life felt so small, like I could throw them over the edge and they would disappear forever. This is the power of Nature.

The earth is as magnetic and energetic as we are. Natural disasters will rage and tear up the earth, a global pandemic will bring life to a screeching halt but the sun always rises the next day, the storm always subsides and the waters always recede. Mother Earth never lets her harsh days stop her beautiful days, a fire may burn down a forest but the trees will always grow back. As life’s situations build up on us, we forget that these are only moments in time, a storm that will calm, a wind that will blow into a gentle breeze. As life rears its head in yet another learning curve, grab a hold of nature, drop your problems and stresses over the side of the canyon and let them go.

Learning to love yourself is not a one day journey. It’s the journey of a lifetime with bumps and ruts along the cobbled road. My hope is that you have found an insight within my words to help you get out of a rut or stand up when you’ve hit a bump and to keep going with your heart filled with love for yourself.
